Back in 1962 a UNICEF relief ship carrying food supplies to the poor Cuban rebels crashed on its way to Buena Ventura on a reef on the southern coast . The bay was know at that time as Bahia de Oro, although there is no concise as to why.The tide was rolling in and as the ship sunk the food supplies started floating toward shore. As it so happens this area was a very large hog farming region. Pigs from miles around smell the food floating in. The pigs were as hungry as the peasants and they couldn't resist the aroma. Within an hour there were thousand of pigs swimming in the ocean and feasting on the supplies. Not many people know that pigs are naturally good swimmers and the salt water made it all the easier, and that's how the Bay of Pigs got its name.
