No Idea. NBA sucks.
Baseball is ridiculous..even when not tainted by 'roids.
Only two sports: NFL and NHL.

I think there are several reasons. For one, a large percentage of American kids don't grow up playing ice hockey. The ice time and equipment costs make the sport virtually inaccessible for people of modest incomes. I believe not being exposed to a game in your youth leads to not caring about it later in life. Also, I think the media "star factor" is in play. NHL players are generally affable and unlikely to command national attention like, say, Terrell Owens. Another big factor is, of course, the TV coverage - which is almost nonexistent.

They didn't go on strike. The owners locked them out.
Attendance is up in every NHL arena this year, the cap is going up 10 mil.
Not everyone has OLN, so that contributes to poor ratings.
Everyone I know is watching and going to hockey, so I can't understand how hockey isn't popular.

Hockey is a passion here like soccer is a passion in the rest of the world. I guess the USA like to have their own sports like basketball and baseball and American Football hmmm. Everyone I know is glued to the screen for the Stanley cup if not they are watching world cup. Hockey and Soccer rule forever

The only reason Game 1 got better ratings is that it was on OLN and it isn't carried by every cable company - whereas ESPN is much more popular and even now the games are on NBC.
Hockey is still popular. It would be a lot more popular if Bettman wasn't dumb and happier than a pig in poo about it being on OLN. Lots of us don't get that stupid channel.

A sport that requires so much power and finesse at the same time is too confusing for an American's mind.
