I think a fish hatchery is a really great field trip, if there is one nearby because they get to feed the fish and get to learn about the whole process including nature awareness and the cycle of life.

I think any field trip that has been built into the curriculum. We live in CT and I always thought the 3rd grade trips were the best. Part of the curriculum meant we had to study a different culture. Most classes studied Japan and they went to a Japanese restaurant (hibachi style). Kids loved that. Then we had to study a city, so we studied NYC and then took a day trip to NYC where we went to see the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and drove down Museum Mile point out all the high points and showing them how big Central Park really was.
Conversely in 8th grade, they took the kids to Boston for a day trip (3 1/2 hour bus ride each way). They didn't try to tie it into the curriculum at all. They hit traffic and had to cut short a museum visit so they could spend more time at Quincy market shopping. Not a good idea in my opinion.
When my daughter was in 4th grade they skipped the American Revolution part of history. I was so mad that we purchased our own books and studied them over the summer (she'd already had a keen interest due to the American Girl dolls) and we visited Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia (check out their website www.history.org). They have lots of wonder full learning experiences. She enjoyed it so much we took another trip last summer as a last harah when she graduated from high school.

I'm in NY so that's all I would know. But the best field trip for elementary grades here is a trip to either Ellis Island or the Museum Of Natural History.

Not sure whats in california. For fifth graders, roller coasters are always popular. For the younger grades I would say a science center with tons for children to do, or a special trip to the zoo, where the keepers will let the kids pet a snake, something like that.

Anywhere with a sense of history to it, especially if there are exhibits that kids can actually interact with. Kids are smart and curious, and do like to learn...they are also active and like to be in the middle of things...some of the best things we did as kids was a 'pioneer town' where people dressed in period clothing, made candles, cooked in brick ovens, etcetra, and there were real or replicated cabins and barns...with livestock of course! The next best fieldtrip memory I have is Washington D.C. in the 5th grade...we toured the WhiteHouse, The Mint, the Smithzonian museum, The Capitol, and of course all the famous monuments. I could have stayed there for weeks!

I have two ideas for you. One is taking the fifth graders camping in cabins with various activity. I know a school that does this and it is a big hit! The other idea is an overnight trip to a landmark city. My elementary took us to Toronto on the train. It was a lot of fun.

Elementary students are so curious about everything!!!! someone has already mentioned the Zoo which is a fun learning experience in itself. depending on the locality nature trails are another great way, not only can they get physical exercise, they can learn about the different types of plants/animals as well as insects that live in the area.
