Because two people loving each other is just OUTRAGEOUS! We all know that that's what this nation needs, more hate. *sarcasm*

This is a complicated answer. I think most of the energy for this opposition to gay marriage comes from church. If the concept of marriage, one which is strongly built-in to the church, changes then the church's power weakens. and let's face it, like the guy said in The Big Lebowski, "Nobody ***** with the Jesus."
I think that given that most areas have some form of ban, the only reason you hear about the idea as an issue or even a crisis in national politics is to generate (hostile) energy which people transform into votes. Why did W talk so much about this in 2004- he got re-elected (barely) didn't he? (I'm still recovering from his 2000 appointment) Think about it- this was debated in the Senate not too long ago while many members complained how it was a waste of time. Now Zarqawi is killed and there's the opportunity to spin the image of the war into success- Mr W went all the way to visit Iraq. Where's the crisis of gay people marrying now? It's not needed to discuss because they can generate energy through the war and win back people who changed their minds in the past year.
The truth is that although churches, as private institutions with no affliation with government, have the right to deny performing a marriage ceremony between anyone they chose to reject, the law cannot deny domestic partners the same legal rights "married" couples have, inheritance, visitation, etc. There's no reason to deny a couple these rights. Social recognition of the union would follow from the legal status.
Why do people disagree with the idea- ignorance and selfishness. These are the two root causes

Many feel that our society is based on a contract between a man and a women. This contract allows for the next generation to be brought up in the best possible way. There is a lot of evidence out there to support that a man and a woman in a stable relationship is the best way to raise children.
The people who differ from you on the gay marriage issue want the same thing as you: for our society to prosper and not be destroyed. Just because you don't believe that gay marriage will cause this doesn't mean that they should abandon their beliefs without reason. Try coming up with logical reasons to suggest that gay marriage will not ruin the fabric of society. You cannot convince anyone of anything if first you can't understand their position.
As a gay man, I recognize that my relationship, however much cherished by me, is not the same as the relationship between a man and a woman. Is it equal, more, or less? That depends on your worldview, but at least we can agree that it is different. I am all for more rights to homosexuals, but I don't needlessly covet the word 'marriage'. With a few legal documents you can have the same rights nowadays anyway.
Ask yourself this instead, who is benefiting from the current attack on marriage? Are there alternatives to the problem that haven't been considered? No issue this controversial is simple, I suggest understanding the reasons and logic behind both sides.

This is the one issue I am totally down the middle on. I'm a socialist, but I'm a Christian as well...Christianity works well with socialism... Most people have problems with gay marriage because it's against their religious beliefs. Sorry folks, but our Founding Fathers (many of whom were not Christian) adopted a separation of CHURCH and STATE for this very reason. If you oppose gay marriage religiously, go speak to your pastor and see what his opinions are. If they are contrary to yours, I suggest you look for another church. However, if you politically oppose gay marriage, I'm afraid you're out of luck. If you really believe in freedom, you believe in the right of people to do stuff that you don't like or approve of. I listen to a German heavy metal band, Rammstein. My brother listens to it every day and hates it, but he puts up with it because I'm free to do it and he's free to listen to whatever he wants. The same thing goes with gay marriage. I'm straight...so I will marry a guy eventually...hopefully. Gay people should have the opportunity to marry if they so choose because our nation guarantees people the freedom to live as they see fit...not as others see fit. It's nobody's business what I do in my bedroom or in a courthouse. The same thing goes for anyone else. Banning gay marriage in the political arena will never happen. In fact, I suspect that it will be legalized before I'm fifty...and I'm 21 now (political science major and German minor).

marriage was a established to be a union between a man and a women long before any of us was born. it's instilled in peoples minds world wide. Plus mostly all religion demonize gay relations . Why can't gay people just have a different title other than marriage?

As with anything not understood fully or actively misunderstood then the knee jerk reaction is to fear it and suppress it. We talk a great deal about freedom in this country but often let our misconceptions and preconcieved notions overide our own innate compassion and desire to embrace positive things. It's hard for some people, set in their ways as they are, to simply understand that a dedicated, loving and mutually supportive realtionship, no matter the sexes involved, is a good thing. Probably the best thing in fact.

Besides the religious aspects, money is a big reason. If the marriage of same sex people is allowed partners will be allowed insurance. Insurance is big money. With HIV medications so expensive the insurance companies won't allow it to go thru. In the long run, morality is based on the bottom line.

Gay marriages should be banned because marriage is between a MAN and a WOMEN. If two persons of the same sex want to live together to have "happiness", let them. But don't expect to be married legally, nor in the eyes of God, which makes a mockery of the institution of marriage.
Look at the animal kingdom, you don't see two male deer finding "happiness", nor do you see two female swan finding "happiness". You always see the male and the female of ANY species of animal together and procreating. Would two gays, or two lesbians also want to procreate? They CAN'T!!!

Homosexuality is disgusting to most people. That said..people are still willing to live and let live. They just don't want it thrown in their faces. They don't want their children taught in school, that sodomy is OK or normal.
You can have legal unions that provide for what gay people want, so why do you think they keep fighting for marriage? They are being disingenuous. They think marriage will make their abnormality...normal and excepted. It won't. It is a sick and dangerous behavior. Keep it in the bedroom and people will stop the counter protests. It's that simple.

It is true that members of the same sex understand one another and their way of thinking. But how in the world can two people of the same sex enjoy each other the way that opposite sexes can.
And then you have the whole children issue. I'm not against adoption, but how do you explain to a child who has two same sex parents? This is your mommy and...this is mommy #2 same applies for daddy.

The president says that gay marriage threatens the sanctity of male/female traditional unions and will undermine the family. Kinda like Saddam & the WMD's.
I don't get it either, and I don't support it, but I'm well aware that puts me in the minority.
