We may not have lost our way completely, but we sure are heading in the wrong path.

We're not the good guys. We've never been the good guys. America as a whole has been a bully throughout its history. We have bullied the Indians, Africans, Spanish and French. Anyone who showed up who we felt didn't belong got bullied. Look at immigrants: the Irish in the 1840s, the Koreans and Chinese in the 1890s, the Japanese during World War II, the Mexicans today. America has never been tolerant of people weaker than we are.
Granted, we have been doing better in the past fifty years or so. Civil rights, women's rights and minority rights have taken a big step forwards. It does seem that the current conservative mindset has taken us a step back, but I strongly believe that we are overdue for a swing back in the liberal direction. Too many Americans are fed up with the current administration.
So, yes, I believe we have lost our way, but I believe we also were never the good guys of the world. We've just got too many problems to sort out on our own, and we are far too arrogant as a whole.
I'd like to end this answer with a disclaimer: this does NOT apply to individual Americans, only to the country itself. Thank you.

oh boy, don't let me get on the soap box. We have definitely lost oor place in the spot light. Where once people all over the world looked up to us, we are now hated by many different countries. We have become 'the Ugly Americans" (just like the book). I think people just tolerate use for the greenbacks. We have lost our edge- a gov't that is a laughing stock, children and seniors in this country going without food or medical care, teens graduating from high school who can't read, the price of gas going thru the roof and yet some people, too many - buying honking giant gas guzzling hummers to show off, the people who care for our physically sick, mentally sick, elderly and children are underpaid while doctors, lawyers, actors, sports figures, politicians and CEOs are making so money that they will never be able to spend it all. We respect money and power and who has the mostthings. What ever happened to deceny, nice manners, charity, respect for one another. Fundamentalist religion has also stuck its ugly little head out and has influenced too many people in our gov't to think along one set of rules, theirs , and no one else's. Sounds like the middle east to me. What has happened to our education system? As one person, I feel so helpless against the tide (of what going wrong). I do what I can. I tutor so that others can read better. I donate blood so that others can live. I write letters to the paper and to people in power when I see wrong doing and compliment them when I see good deeds. If we don't stand up and declare that we are tired of this, nothing will change. Let's make America number one again.

I don't think America's ever been the good guy. Not even in cowboy movies long long ago where it was established that Indians were bad and should be killed. America is very good at propaganda and manipulates people who don't know anything but what's on TV. It's a real shame because there are so many nice American individuals. In America you don't know what's going on in the rest of the world.

Oh I'm sorry Mr. Pussy, let's journey into the land of make believe and lets pretend that America and Western Culture isn't at war with MUSLIM ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISTS!

But again, that's just pretending, in fact we are at war with people you can't reason with! The only way to get through to these people is with a bullet in their skull. And please tell me Mr. Liberal, tell me what you're going to do when you're in a cave with a camcorder on you when 3 crazy Arabs toting AK-47s and ski masks are about to cut your head off. Oh wait, you don't have to worry about that do you? No you don't, our troops have to worry about that because they are fighting for our rights!

You say we are bullies? Shut up and get a pair of balls man. Seriously, you are a cliche liberal. Just know that you have your freedoms from the blood that was spilled. We would have nothing if it wasn't for the wars we have been in and all the men who have died to preserve our freedoms.

Just remember that next time you want to go Bush and America bashing you liberal son of a *****!

I am not down with Big Brother checking me up he wants to see why I bought TP I'll give 'em a swirlie.

I wouldn't say that it is America persay, but a large group of people who feel this way that happen to be American. I think that some people lose their way when they are blinded and programmed into feeling hatred and seeking revenge on another country. It's very sad.

I think we've definitely lost our way. We've been drifting away from principles of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I'm hoping the next administration can bring us back to core American values.

America is still a powerhouse... we're just going about our power in a different way... but in all truthfullness, we aren't going to be the big dogs on the block anymore... China is coming up in full force. Its sad to know that if it doesn't happen in our life time, its gonna happen in our children's life time. But that went a little off from your question... my answer is that America is just sidetracked ^__^
