Probably the same reason as the US. Dumb ultra conservative religious based leadership that always believes it is right and enjoys engaging in p!$$ing contests with other nations.

Iran isn't alienating themselves...the United States media is making it look that way though. Iran, like Pakistan and India, want nukes for a couple of reasons...one is so that they have a seat at the international table. Having nuclear weapons is a sure way to gain that kind of power. Second, if all the nations surrounding you had nukes, would you want to be the only one that didn't? I didni't think so. By the way, we've continued with our nuclear program even after we made a proliferation treaty with the Russians after the fall of the USSR. Maybe the first nation to begin proliferation should be the biggest one in the business, us.

They aren't. They are actually being quite clever. They know they will be offered extravagant rewards to abandon their nuclear ambitions. They are gambling, quite successfully, that the US will not take action against them in light of the polls and wave of anti-war sentiments. The tide appears to be turning in Iraq and Iran is "considering" the offers of gifts while it decides whether the time is right to accept...or hold out for more.
Of course they run the risk that Israel, America, and coalition will pull it's head out of ...wherever...and take them on.

Actually they are not. They simply are exercising their sovereign rights as a country and standing firm against bush telling them what to do.
