I have charter DSL installed 2 weeks ago, and use a CAT5 cable on my Dell laptop. That works fine.

I decided to also connect my Sony Vaio laptop using a USB cable, thus, 2 laptops simultaneously. When I click on internet explorer on my Sony, it pops up a message: "no connection to the internet is currently available...etc". When I tried going internet options to set up my connectivity, it only showed options for modem and phone line. I cannot seem to find an option to connect any other way. Help, please? Thanks to all you computer geeks. :-)

normally, you can only use one of the connections, if you used the ethernet connector, it disables the USB and vice versa. Pretty sure you are not connect by the usb to the modem. You need to get a router to go between the modem and the computers

you cant do it like that.

you need to use a router.

first off, your usb port is not your internet card, you have to directly connect to that from your computer, that is what goes to the modem, then from the modem to the router, then you connect all your computers laptops etc to the router.

sometimes a modem will have extra ports for a second machine. now ........if you have a wireless modem connected to your pc, then you have to have a wireless networking card that you would use on your extra lap tops, one for each machine. the usb wireless networking cards connect to the lap top directly to the usb port on the lap top, and then the card searches for your wireless modem and will connect to that .

it goes like this,

DSL comes in from the phone line thru a spliter to your wireless modem, then you can use your wireless networking card on your lap top to connect to the modem, or you can install a wireless networking card on your computer and it will do the same thing ... connect you to the modem, or you can connect your pc directly to the modem, and the modem will still do the same thing for your lap top but again you have to have a wireless networking card connected to any extra machines you will use in order for that machine to connect to the internet.

just plugging in the laptop to the usb port wont work for wireless unless you share the network in widows and that would just be a shared connection, wich you can do in your windows settings. the modem connects to the pc the second machine connects to the pc and its connection is shared but you have to go into the shared connection settings and alow it.

when you are setting up a computor to the dsl it needs to be connected to the wall via the specific cable that they should have given you for the first computor...after that you can get a wireless kit from any comp store like best buy...thats what i had to do...and when in doubt call the company and they can give you easy step by step directions
