Tropical rainforests exist because of the unique climatic conditions found in the regions north and south of the Earths equator. Continuous heat and humidity allow trees and plants to grow year round, without seasonal interruptions.

Rainforests are defined by rainfall. In fact, they are literally created by it. Weatherwise, they have an average rainfall of 160 to 400 inches with daily temperatures averaging over 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity that never falls below 80%.

In the Amazon basin there are at least 130 days of rain a year and, in many places, up to 250 days. Temperatures change little between daytime averages of 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and night-time lows of 22 degrees Celsius (72 Fahrenheit). As a result of these conditions, the tropics are inhabited by thousands of species, trees, plants, animals and insects which all uniquely adapted to the climate.

Where are tropical rainforests?

Tropical rainforests are located around the equator from the Tropic of Cancer in the north, to the Tropic of Capricorn in the south. The largest rainforests are in Brazil (South America), Zaire (Africa) and Indonesia (islands found near the Indian Ocean). Other tropical rainforests lie in Southeast Asia, Hawaii and the Caribbean Islands. The Amazon rainforest in South America is the world's largest, covering an area about two-thirds the size of the continental United States.
