You can resave the file. Open the file, go to Save As... and in the dialog box, type the name and the extension you want. For example, if you want to change the file "yahoo.gif" to have the extension .png, this would be the following procedure:

Open yahoo.gif
Go to File, Save As...
Type in File Name "yahoo.png"
Press Save

Depends on your operating system. In Windows, right click and select "rename". In dos, use the ren command: ren file.ex1 file.ex2. In unix, mv will do the same thing. Not sure about Macs.

Changing the extension may cause the file to be unavailable to programs that use it.
