When reading the Diary of Anne Frank, it is important to remember that her father found it after she was dead. We do not know for a fact that he did not edit it somewhat. Still, it is a poignant look at growing up in a very bad time, trying to act as normal as possible in extreme conditions, and I enjoyed it. The first time I read it I was about the age Anne was when she wrote it (early teens), and it was a six-hankie story for me. I'm not Jewish, but I think it's possible Anne was responsible for my being especially fond of Jews for most of my life. (Well, actually, that honor probably has to be shared with a few adult authors.)

I am able to identify with Anne Frank. She was sensitive girl with a lot of dreams and hopes. She felt that most people didn't understand her or care about her feelings. In many ways she was an ordinary young girl. What made her different was her sensitivity, courage, faith, and the way she expressed herself in writing.

Are you an optimist? Do you see the goodness in people despite some of their actions? Can you forgive and forget no matter how someone has wronged you?
What if a person you love was being harassed? thrown out of school? kicked out of her house? forced to run away? sent to jail? ... and died? Could you forgive the people who did this to your very best friend?
** ** **
This is the situation that Otto Frank had to face almost fifty years ago during World War II. he and his entire family were persecuted (harassed, thrown out of school and work, kicked out of their house, forced to run away, caught and sent to concentration camps) by the Nazis. Everyone he loved most in the world died in these camps at the hands of Adolf Hitler. Alone he mourned the loss of his wife, Edith, and his two daughters, Margot and Anne. Otto Frank was the sole survivor from his family to make it out of the camps alive.
With this tragedy, how could he possibly be an optimist? His family was persecuted and killed simply because they were Jewish. Upon returning to the attic where he and his family were in hiding for over two years before they were caught, Otto Frank found Anne's diary. It chronicled her own thoughts, feelings, fears, and hopes of this two year period in hiding from the Nazis. As he read the diary, Otto Frank wept as her voice seemed to come alive once again, "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."
Could he too share his daughter's faith in humanity? What enabled her to see the goodness in people? What could he learn from his daughter by reading this diary? could others learn from Anne's experiences and insights, too?

Since I lived in Amsterdam, Netherlands for a couple years, and actually visited her home (or at least where she hid out for several years), and have talked to several dutch people, especially many who survived WWII, it is their consensus that she was human, not a great hero, except in the regard that she kept a diary that proved the holocaust to be a reality, and the courage it takes to overcome extreme fear, fear of almost certain death. She was/is in my opinion someone to be admired especially when we start to moan and gripe about how hard we have it.

the person, or her diary?
One of my favorite all time books, and not because it is so much fun to read....but what a bright young girl, so brave.
The most interesting thing to me in her diary is that despite everything that was going on around her, she still was worried about, and wrote about normal teenage things such as boys, friends, etc. I wonder if that is just human nature, or if she was just extra special...I know she had talent, and it's a shame the world did not get to know her better...she left us behind a wonderful learning tool.
