if you are on death row and you are on your way to be executed you are considered a dead man walking because you are already dead as far as everyone is concerned and yet you are walking

They call a man on the way to execution that. On the way from his cell to the electricchair the guards yell out "dead man walking"

Dead man walking refers to a convict on death row who, for all intents and purposes, is as good as dead, but still walking (until execution).

I believe that this originated from a death row chantra. When the inmate is escorted from their cell to the execution chamber the other inmates announce that a "deadman is walking".
