Freedom of speech does not matter when your cursing and saying vulgor and offending music. I love rap and hip-hop music but alot of the words are inappropriate to play to radio in tv. Children are affected enough by tv and radio, imagine if they could hear everything they say in these songs. I have a child and I will whip his behind if he ever repeated those things!

This is an age old debate, since the time of the Protestant Reformation and even before that! But here's the basic logic on the censoring of certain words. If you know the movie "Gone With the Wind" or just the one part where the guy says "Frankly, Scarlet, I don't give a damn," the word "damn" sent shockwaves through the country. Of course different words cause similar reactions now like racial slurs and sexual ones, and those are the ones the FCC doesn't allow on TV. Not only because of children but because of overall exposure to the audience. The major networks like ABC, CBS have a lot more guidelines than say Vh1 or MTV, but they still have to follow the rules and usually "indecent language" in rap songs is censored because of the reaction that a lot of people have.

Yes, I know a long winded answer. If you google censorship you'll get a lot more information. (You're lucky I didn't start rambling about the PMRC in the '80's!) But here's the basic gist "the larger the audience the more censored it is" for TV at least. The arguement the censors use is basically that it's for the protection of the public.

Because the FCC has established "community standards" which the broadcast companies must obeyed by or risk being fined huge amounts of money and possibly lose their license. It's not considered a violation of free speech, because the rapper has the right to say whatever he/she wants (and did when the song was recorded or the video made), but the broadcast company has the right to censor any material they deem offensive and have the legal responsibility to censor any material that the FCC considers offensive. What is considered offensive to the FCC changes though depending on the time of day and whether it's cable (HBO, MTV, etc) or over-the-air (ABC, NBC, etc.)

All censorship on TV and the Radio is from the FCC. They believe that certain words shouldn't be allowed on TV and Radio. That those words could be bad for younger listeners. Yes it is a form of stopping freedom of speech and expression but it is still not stopping it fully because we can say what we want in our own personal lives.

Yes but it means that TV station rated levels can be lower so instead of MTV being 18+ because of the F and N word, it can be for all ages because younger kids might not figure the words out.

But as far as the middle finger goes I think that is totally pointless because they just blur out the middle finger and we all know what they are doing or implying so what does it matter if there are pixels in front of it.

Please...tell me you`re joking,if you don`t know why. Freedom of speech(expression?) does NOT give people the right to dehumanize others...or to talk in such vulgar ways that you actually are embarrassed to hear it OR see it...There are some VERY good rappers..the vulgarity doesn`t make or break the rap.."clean" rap is great....I would like to see MORE of it. I know this isn`t a popular stance I`m taking, but you asked, and I`m just being honest.(That`s MY right) : ) peace...From my heart to yours........!! : )

Your right to do offensive and/or violent things ends where my ears/nose begins. You have every right to use words like that, just as people have the right to NOT have to listen to them. The channels watch what they put on to appeal to a much greater base of people. If they alienate too many, they won't make money...and that's what they're really there for.
