Like you would say quitting something cold turkey, without any help. Example: "He's quitting drugs cold turkey." Without help from a rehab.

I don't know in reference to "programming and design", but in reference to addictive substances, it means to quit completely and suddenly. For example a smoker who just stops one day without counseling or nicotine patches.

The source is the idea that cold turkey is a food that requires little preparation, so "to quit like cold turkey" is to do so suddenly and without preparation.

there are two definitions for cold turkey in my own words.

1. it is a bird that is either frozen or it is a cooked bird that is eatin as left overs and put in the fridge
or
if you have quit smoking you can quit by just putting the cigerette down and not using any medication or over the counter drugs.
