Not true. It stands for alternating current/direct current. It is from their mum's sewing machine label.

It's after the guy's sister's sewing machine ... it took AC/DC power.
She used to sew the little short pants outfits for Angus.
(I heard that on a VH1 show with the band)
But this is what I just found online:
Where did AC/DC get their name?
[Info taken from 'Shock To The System' by Mark Putterford]
The Young's sister Margaret suggested something she'd seen on the back of a vacuum cleaner: 'AC/DC'. According to Angus, "It had something to do with electricity, so it seemed to fit...". The Young brothers were ignorant of the bisexual connotation that the term carried, and after opening for bisexual rocker Lou Reed, many gay clubs tried to book them...convinced they were a bisexual group.
... you be the judge.

"The acronym "AC/DC" stands for "Alternating Current/Direct Current" and refers to electrical currents. Angus Young liked the way that this name symbolized the band's energy and "High Voltage Rock'n'Roll"."

I can't believe these band name meanings of urban myth origin still exist, yet they do. It was also said that AC/DC stood for the bi-sexual thing, well it does but it doesn't pertain to the band. The other one was about KISS = Knights In Satans Sevice , lol - what a crock!

They just did a recent interview on VH1classic and the band name came from one of the band mates grandmothers sewing mahine plug in. The AC/DC PLUG. I found it to be very interesting.

Alternating Current/Direct Current, something about electricity. Angus Young named it this because of his sister's sowing machine. He liked how it represented the groups high voltage rock 'n roll style.
