the person who wrote industrial revolution is wrong. the industrial revolution did not come about until the late 1800s.

here is a good answer:

the english colonies were separated by the mother country by an ocean, yet the mother country wanted these colonies for their natural resources. they took these natural resources and traded them for other goods or for money. this was how the colonies financed themselves and how the british crown made the colonies worthwhile and profitable. one of the most famous trade routes was the triangle trade, where tobacco, furs and other goods would come from north america to africa, where they would trade for slaves, which would then go to the caribbean for rum.

As part of their colonial charters, Parliament and the King required the colonies to conduct all their trade through Britain. Parliament then passed severely restrictive laws concerning colonial trade which greatly favored Britain. For example, any particular product which the colonies could have obtained more cheaply from elsewhere, Parliament passed import duties payable to the Crown which pushed its cost above the available price for that item in Britain. In turn, the colonies were required to sell their products directly to Britain, even though there were better markets available elsewhere.

They looked for places to trade because they needed trade to survive, and to learn more about the region. If they found that there was an essential mineral there, they could tell people from their home country to send more people to mine the valuable mineral.
