We've used Japanese Koi. They're beautiful and come in so many varieties.

We have a 3000 lb above ground fish pond, with a waterfall, water lilies and live plants. We have about 100 different colored koi and who knows how many mosquito fish (they just had babies, hundreds of them!). We put 3 water filters in and my husband rinses off the filters almost every day (only since we have had all those mosquito fish). Before that, he used to rinse the filters about twice a week. It's worth the work, which is not that bad, because it is a beautiful, relaxing thing to watch.

I keep both Koi and Goldfish. Have a pond that is about 4000 gallons, with waterfalls, etc. Great pastime and great to sit around with the pleasant sound of water. Easy to keep.

Yeah, pond fish are easy to maintain because their used to a sort of dirty environment. So if you have any pond fish you won't have to clean the cage as often.
If your going to eat them(bass, brim, catfish, etc.) just make sure you thouroghly clean them off.
