Does this actually work to raise good children? Or is it just an inivitation to walk all over mom?

I agree with most of what has been said! It seems totally ironic that these moms who hated chores so bad are defeating their own purposes by creating more housework for themselves! It seems like this might be why it keeps getting harder to tolerate other peoples children.

Those kind of parents have issues with their own parents that they haven't dealt with yet. They are getting back at their parents by letting their kids do whatever they want and it's not healthy. My aunt is raising her son like that and he walks all over her, doesn't listen, and is lazy beyond belief. Kids need to do chores - it teaches them responsibility, respect for work, and also that they need to help out at home and be a part of a functioning family unit.

These are the same mom's that will complain later because their kids never clean up after themselves. Having chores around the house (age appropriate, of course) teaches children to care for their surroundings and belongings. They are more responsible and better suited for the real world. Afterall, if they never had to do anything as children, why would they help a spouse/ partner during adulthood.

I agree that it's an open invitation to walk all over Mom. Doing chores teaches life skills and how to be a team player. In order for the family unit to run smoothly everybody has to pull his/her weight.( if they are old enough to do chores)

I don't agree with this. I think all kids need some little responsibilities. Whether it's doing the dishes some nights during the week, keeping their room clean, or taking care of a pet.

But by all means, it shouldn't be something the child can't handle. Kids still need time to be kids. It shouldn't inferfere with homework, or having some social or playtime.

I'm still a child. give your children some chores. They'll thank you for it in the long run. My boyfriend laughs at me when i cook or clean up the kitchen after dinner{by habit} and he always says to me "one day, youll make a good wife" and it makes me happy. and perhaps maybe you have a son? well when he goes to college... he'll look at his room mate and wish his parents had taught him better. lol It will help him in picking a good wife, not a lazy one.

i've never heard a mother say that...anyway, kids need to learn the value of things and they need to know that nothing in life is easy...since they are children, they can't get jobs so your home is their responsibility...it teaches them respect for what they have and it gives them a good work ethic for when they get older
