Paul McCartney! John Lennon was almost his equal in the Beatles since they were collaborators but McCartney surpassed Lennon after the Beatles breakup. McCartney had numerous solo and Wings hits, Lennon only had a few.
The most successful contemporary songwriter is definitely Diane Warren!

Without a doubt Willie Nelson\
Willie Nelson is an American icon. He has recorded 250 albums, written 2,500 songs, and for half a century played countless concerts across America and around the world. He's been instrumental in shaping both country and pop music, yet his appeal crosses all social and economic lines. Emmylou Harris once said, "If America could sing with one voice, it would be Willie's."

Burt Bacharach (serrrriously!) and Dianne Warren are
following closely on the heels of Mr. Stevie Wonder.
David, author of the Psalms gets my vote for pre-millennium compositions, though.

If your meaning of success is money than the answer is McCartney.
If you mean who wrote the most meaningful songs, I'd say Lennon or Dylan.

Tu Pac, even though he's dead, he's still coming out with awesome CD's
Kurt Donald Cobain, though he and Nirvana only had about 2 or 3 CD's, they were selling em and making there fame big.
