Im not in a rock band, but from my experience at concerts I would say some things to do are...

Try to get the crowd involved [clapping, screaming, chanting, etc.]

Move around a lot. Don't just stay in one spot.

Most important: have fun.

Just some suggestions:

1. Have a good intro...something a minute or two long. Make sure the first song somehow connects with that intro.

2. Ending song must be a good ender (well....duh). Make sure it's powerful, or something you want everyone to remember.

3. If a lot of people know your songs, change it up on stage. The the drum part at one point, guitar part...etc. Make sure it's very very noticable, so people can go "oh wow, that's cool".

4. The lights on-stage should co-incide with the music. If it's a very fast part with a fast drum beat, guitar riff....etc....have a strobe going.

5. Be uniform as a band, dont have one of you jumping around, another standing still, and the other headbanging.

6. It's also good to play songs that the people know (as long as they are originals, I'm against cover-songs).

Hope that helps somewhat.

Hate to give a vague answer, but I'm gonna anyway. It all depends on what your band is about. Are you into mayhem and chaos? Or are you into groupies? Or both? Do what feels natural on stage. Good stage shows are about energy and having a great time playing music you love for the people you love. If you're into the mayhem jump up and down and destroy your set, burn things and fling stuff out into the audience. And if you're the sort of band who enjoys have naked people running around, encourage the behavior. ;)

Just don't let your onstage antics overshadow the music. Trust me, when I saw Motley Crue, their stage show did not out-shine the music.

My best concert would open with a good Black Mass. The beautiful choir girls would be flipping their pages from the back of the choir book, towards the front. A holographic image of Satan would rise from a cauldron of boiling something and Ol' Scratch would wink and laugh. A stage crasher would be beat to death, and kicked over the edge of the stage. The singer would shoot a police officer, and then try to grab a girl in the first roll. It would be mayhem and terror until all of a sudden the tempo changes and the lead dude starts to sing, "That Kiss". Awesome.

Blacklight is a wonderful tool. It must be used in the right concept, but if used correctly it can be very fun and exciting. Try looking at different kinds of fabric that shine and reflect in the black light. (if you have a drummer) put neon colored tape over his sticks (just don't put any where he holds them, this will make it slippery when his hands get sweaty.) Try and find neon pick's that will glow in black light. ( i do not know if they make these, but it would be a neat idea! And if they dont make them, look into spary paint maybe) put a different color of neon tape around the cuffs of your jeans and shirt. (that way when the lights go off all they can see is your silouette). they make glow in the dark / blacklight paint ( by crayola i think) look at your neighborhood lowe's/home depot. Have fun with neon tape and paint. Get creative, at concerts anything can work if your do it right.
I hope it helps,
Reagan

Justin, I would recommend looking at VH1 or MTV for guidance (see what other bands are doing) examine exactly what it is that makes you think there video expands their music. Lot's of video - even check the Oldies for hints.

After the show, set your guitar on fire, smash the drums and set that on fire, hit the bass strings with a drum stick, and to top it all off, throw guitar picks and drumsticks to people.
