Soundsl ike a loud rod knock. Have you gone longer than normal for your oil changes? When you run low on oil, the connecting rods wear out causing this slapping rattle type noise. Could be a piston pin too. Either way it isnt good if you have a lot of white smoke emmitting from the exhaust. means that your coolant is leaking past the water jacket in your motor and escaping through the exhaust. Either way this is a majoe engine overhaul or engine replacement. Try www.auto-part.com for a good price on used engines.

i had a 98 toyota corolla with same problem, not a rod.
you have a worn lifter, and its not getting oil. when lifters get worn they wont prime up oil. and when they dont get oil you wear parts out quickly. lifters, push rods, valve stem seals (which is the culprit of your white smoke). when valve seals wear out they allow oil to seap thru into the combustion chamber and burn with the fuel.

do you have to continously put oil into your car??? check your rear seal, jack up the car and look in the area of where the motor and tranny connect. is there alot of oil there???? this is probably where your losing your oil and causing your lifters to run dry and wear out.

now for the repair part, to fix it it is going to cost ya. i know you didnt want to hear that but i just went thru it myself, if what i said is true of what is going on with your car.

your going to probably have to get rear seal replaced, get new lifters, valve stem seals (probably valve guides too), rear seals dont cost but 7 to 10 bux, but putting it in is better left to an experienced mechanic. it will run you around 300 for mechanic to do it. valve jobs are around the same. so your looking into about 750 to 800 after all is said and done.

now you can do a little quick fix if the money for the real fix sounds a bit steep. if there is a little life still left in those lifters you can do this:

pour a quart of tranny fluid in your oil,(tranny fluid is lighter than oil and will be easier for lifter to prime itself). run it for about 5 minutes, during this time listen to see if the rattling stops. now you will have to change your oil and filter cause the tranny fluid breaks down the visciousity of the oil but your lifter is now primed and ready, but soon you will be back in your position.
