Sounds like the seal on the crankshaft has failed, the smoke is probably from oil blowing back on the converter....

hi Sarah, Im an excperienced BMW person. Now, for starters you are able to rule out a gas/oil situation because of the fact this may well be indicated by utilising blue smoke from the exhasut. Your buddy is nice. White smoke can point out an underlying Catalytic converter situation. in spite of the indisputable fact that, there are different subject concerns - at the same time with gas pump, engine issues. Now, the only thank you to tell is by utilising putting her onto a diagnostic finding out maching on the main BMW $tealer or an independant BMW professional. Please do no longer waste it slow with an trouble-free intense street mechanic - supply them a BMW to play with it particularly is like giving a toddler goodies and excpeting them to no longer consume it!! you're suitable although, your staring at around £one million,000 at the same time with labour no count if it particularly is a Catalytic converter situation. additionally, sure you are able to call RAC/AA and alter right into a member. If I undergo in innovations rightly, you're able to desire to pay a years subsricption value in strengthen or assume to pay over the percentages for a one-off rescue. solid success

The converter smoking is most likely is blowback and the oil leak would have to be physically searched for. Maybe if you started from the oil pan and worked your way up you'd find the oil leak.

It is possible that your valve cover leakage. There are a lot more seals on the engine that can leak. From oil pan to time chail cover.
If the oil runs down the exhaust, then it is most likely valve covers.
Hope that helps.

I had a jeep cherokee, they are renown for their tendency to leak oil. From what I understand it generally comes from one of two places. The valve cover (gasket) or the crankcase seal.

Try tracing the flow of oil. hopefully, it's the valve cover.

it could be 2 problums, One your spark plugs are not firing at the right time, or you could have your head potrs leeking. First chek all the spark plugs and then open up your rediator cap, and look if there are any white stuff in the rediator? If there is then your head is leaking.
