I think we drive on parkways because with out them I think that space would be covered by water. And the reason we park in driveways is so we can make space on the street for those people who don't have a driveway or garage. the reason they call pants a pair is because they have 2 legs.

1) We drive on parkways because the man who began our road system (Robert Moses) was the head of the Parks Dept. when he started building them. Robert Caro's award winning book goes into all the machinations -- it is fascinating and well written.

2) You park on a drive-away which being American you shortened to driveway.

3) pants are a plural and refer to something that contains 2 items (thus a pair).

To begin, their is mispelled. You should have typed "there" which sounds the same but has a different meaning. It is possible that pants are referred to as a pair because whoever wears a pair of pants has two legs to put into them.

Remember, that one also drives a ball on a golf course, and has drive to do well at school, and has drive to succeed. Drive has many meanings, and you should become familiar with them all. Keep an dictionary on a table next to you, and pick a word you have never used before, and use it for a week. Do the same the following week, and soon you will have use of many many words.

I've often wondered myself this very same question. The pair of pants I think I can answer...maybe. Pants are a pair because you have two legs and their are two sides to the pants. The drive on parkways and park on driveways....I dunno. I guess maybe God just wanted things to be that way.

Parkway was coined in the 50's to impart a feel of elegance to the road to which this moniker was given, driveway was the path you drove to enter your garage (driveway being used in horse-drawn days). The "pair" refers to the two legs of a pair of pantaloons.

Well, for the same reasons that we haul cargos on ships and shipments on trucks. In times past, mens clothing stores used to advertise "one" and "two" pant suits - the two pant suits were presumed better because the "trousers" (military term - men do not ware pants) wore out quicker than did the coat. Thus the ensemble would last longer.

Pants is a short form of Pantaloons which originally were used in a pair.. one for each leg. Pants is also a vulgar form of Pant used by the garment industry.
