The code is 1

It is the area code. The area code designates the general location of the number being called. Some states have 1 area code (usually less populated staes), others have multiple codes (denser populated). It also helps to distinguish between who exactly your calling. My number may be 444-444-4444 and I live in New York but someone else's no. is 333-444-4444 and they live in Las Vegas. The first 3 digits will put the call to the right area or person you are phoning.
