Having ridden for a number of years, I have heard both sides of the argument, and seen both sides of the coin. Having given it serious thought, I believe helmets should be required for anyone under the age of 21 and anyone with less than three years experience riding. After that, it should be at the rider's discretion. Personally I ride with a helmet in town, and without it on the open road. I choose to wear it not because of what I might do to myself, I'm more concerned more about what someone else can do to me. Most motorcycle accidents involve another vehicle, usually a car or truck, most happen on urban streets, not the open road, or are caused by some idiot on a crotch-rocket showing off and going way too fast to keep control of the bike. Cruising on the highway is much safer and more fun.

From a personal perspective you should want to wear a helmet anyway so you shouldn't care if the government requires it.
If your government has any sort of social health program, then it should require a helmet b/c of the costs associated with healing someone who's been in any sort of motorcycle accident. Of course, it may be cheaper to deal with a dead motorcylcist. You would have to look for a study on the subject.

Personally I don't think anyone should be required to wear a helmet or wear a seat belt.
There's enough education out there that people know what will happen to them if they don't wear a helmet or a seat belt.
I also think that the government or hospitals should have to offer services or pay bills of those that got into an accident because the people weren't intelligent enough to wear a helmet or seat belt.
Our society want's to offer inexpensive health care, inexpensive insurance and the government sticks it's head into keeping these rates low, and thus also has the right to dictate making wearing helmets.
Personally I feel all of this should be decided between the individual, the insurance companies and the hospitals.
I mean, If the person wasn't wearing a helmet and gets into a really bad accident, who's responsible? It shouldn't be me and all the social security I have to shell out of my paycheck to give to the person because he/she wasn't intelligent enough to wear a helmet.
The government shouldn't get into everyone's personal business, nor should it have to be around to babysit them.
(Oh I'm republican if you can't tell)

Yes!!!! Every one that rides a motorcycle should be required to wear a helment. For example take a look at what happened to the Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Rothelisberger. He recieved a broken bone in his Sinus Cavity, a Broken Nose and a Broken Jaw. He also had most of his teeth knocked out and a 9 inch gash in the back of his head.

No, as long as you and your family are willing to take the damage if you have a wreck, then no. Florida has a law that you are supposed to have $10,000 insurance to cover medical cost. Most don't though. The people who sustain head injuries are costing the rest of us alot in insurance rates. Not to mention social security if they can't work because of injuries. They took the choice not to wear a helmet, they should be willing to waive the rights to any injury related payments resulting from a head injury in the future

in an ideal world, every safety mechanism would be optional and we would all be smart enough to not even need them. if somehow we got into an accident, then we would have the huge savings account to cover our costs.
we wouldn't need speed limits. we wouldn't need DWI laws. no old half-blind men with hats on would be driving. the steets would neve be oily. all curves would be prefect and banked. no moron would run a red light or stop sign. no tire would ever go flat. no bison would ever wander out into the road. no dogs would make you swerve. no rocks would ever fall off of a cliff onto the road. everyone would know how to merge. only fast drivers would ride in the left lane. and no would ever have to wear protection.

Ask Ben Rothenberger? Ask him now if he feels that a helmet is somehow limiting or restricting his freedom. No law. people should have the right to do whatever they want to to themselves.
