I've heard that the government has to, by law release a list of all the sexual offenders in your area. But I don't want to type in sexual offenders because it could bring up unapropriate websites.

I think all the states have a Megan's Law website, and that's usually where you'll find an official registry of sex offenders. After reading about the legalities of accessing and using the information, you can usually do a search by county, ZIP Code, etc. The California site is: http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov/.

The easiest place would be your local police station.
If you're uncomfortable going there your U.S.
Comgressperson would be the next logical choice.
