to find food, attract/find mates, detect danger/predators, identify other animals' territory

-find food e.g. shark smells blood from far away, know that there's weak prey, swims to prey and devours it

- attract/find mates e.g. some female animals have a scent that tells the males they are mature and ready to mate

- detect danger e.g. breeze carries scent of a predator to a deer, deer is alerted, whole herd runs away

- identify territory e.g. wolves mark territory by peeing on trees... ><

:) hopefully this helped

The sense of smell is being used for several purposes.

Identifying food
It's clear enough. But should remeber that we use this too. Generaly we are trying to identify the quality of the food by smellig it.

Recognizing teritories
This is still present with us... Have you ever heard or thought or felt "Smells like at home"?? Well you got it.

Identifying Hazards
Animals use their sense of smell to feel a hazardous predators and excape... How do human beings implement this? Have you ever been thinking that "it smells like we have gas leakage'? Got it I am sure!

Finding Mates
It's clear enough... We know how does it feels.

And many others

Nature is so diverse... I can't cover up everything!

Hope It was useful

Your questions a tad vauge, thus the odd answers. You need to have a specific animal because all animals use their sense of smell differently. Dogs use their long snouts and noses (which have powerful receptors within it), and something like an insect uses their antennas. So, its kind of hard to answer your question.

Animals use their sense of smell to find food, locate their home, identify their group (for those animals that travel in herds) and to detect danger or an approaching enemy.
