My scalp often becomes so sore that it is almost unbearable to wash it (I do anyway). I can't even run a brush through it. Doctor has no answer. This is a serious question.

what kind of doctor have you seen? have you seen a neurologist? it sounds like it could be a neuralgia if it's not a skin condition. there are a bunch of different types of neuralgias, is it just the top/back/sides/all over your scalp? how about your forehead or other areas of your face?

I find that if i keep my hair pulled back in a ponytail or whatever for a long period of time my head becomes sore too. If you do this you may want to give the ponytails a rest for a few days and see if this works. GOOD LUCK

Too many chemical treatments? Perms, colors, highlights. Maybe a reaction to shampoo, conditioner, mousse, gels, etc. Ask your stylist maybe he or she might have an answer for you.
