Us goverment is waiting for our economy to reach the trillion dollar deficit to start thinking about the easiest and cheapest way to significantly reduce our deficit and improve our economy by reducing our foreign petroleum dependence by at least 50%. This question has only one answer under my personal opinion; the congress and the president are so busy counting their money that there is no time left to analyze about realistic and cheap ways to fix one of the problems of this country which could make a chain reaction and fix many others that might not seem of the same type at first glance. Ironically the solution lies on self suficiency and not global economy in this specific topic. Thank you for your time reading on the the thoughts that come to my mind when i dont have anything to do and think of how to make the world a better place, and lets hope that US follow the example of an ex-third world country like brasil and that way continue on with the "american dream". boricualoco00@yaho

When we talk about e85 people think of corn as the raw material of it and that is not true; it is the most common but not the most efficient. The most efficient is sugar cane because of its high concentration of glucose. So analyzing the posibilities of diversificating the raw material so that the dependence in a single monopolyzed good is eliminated could be the solution to the "possible" colapse of the corn crops in us. Other possible products to use are beats.

Interesting...many studies have been conducted regarding Ethanol. Keep in mind that ethanol is produced from corn. If every single farm in America grew corn we'd be able to replace about 8% of our oil imports...not really enough to make a significant impact. Also keep in mind that if for any reason the crop of corn was destroyed, be that storm or drout, we would have no product to convert into ethanol and no fuel. Before you read on please keep in mind that I'm a registered independent...Under the Bush administration quite a bit of effort was put into the creation of a new agency within the DOE (Department of Energy) called the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Dept....within that department the Hydrogen Infrastructure and Technologies Program was established. Why Hydrogen? Because it can't be politicized, don't have to worry about drouts or damaged crops and hydrogen comprises 80+% of the mass in our universe (not something we're likely to run out of anytime soon). http://www.hydrogen.energy.gov/ According to the "Posture Plan" our economy will be carbon free by 2060 with hydrogen as the likely successor. Also check out Canada's FCC (Fuel Cell Canada) for their plan to globally commercialize fuel cells.

Our current president has done great things when it come to decreasing our dependence on foreign oil. Just gotta know where to look. Try this http://thomas.loc.gov/ and under "search bill text" type the word hydrogen and you'll see every piece of legislation dealing with hydrogen as an alternative fuel.
