sneezing and coughing are both times when people with weak muscles of the pelvic floor (aka pubo-coccygeus muscle, Kegal muscles or PC muscles; this hammock shaped muscle is pierced by the urethra, the vagina and the rectum, all three systems: urinary, digestive and reproductive) might have weakness and not be able to "control" these sphincters. It is more a problem in women, esp after they have had numerous babies and episiotomies and have not had a chance to get those muscles tightened again. If these signs are in young women and become problematic, you should start exercising here. Lots of kinds of exercises possible. Women who are pregnant in childbirth classes learn a lot about theses muscles to help them control pushing and to get the pelvic floor muscles toned. If you start leaking URINE, it is not a good sign and you need to start exercising. Women who leak urine with laugh, sneeze, cough or jogging are showing urinary INCONTINENCE and as it worsens with age, diapers may need to be worn. Depends take up a lot of shelf space in most stores where the baby diapers are! It is a common problem. Some people have bowel control problems too as they age and so the diapers can be for both.
The per cent of elderly who have these problems is quite high. DO yourself a favor and start exercising now to prevent problems in the elderly years. If you are young, and you already have signs of related problems, get exercising! If you need specific exercises, e-mail me for more info. Some folks may need a pessary inserted if it gets too bad or possibly even surgery. Most severe is a prolapsed uterus (uterus comes out vagina) cystocele, bladder collapses, or rectocoel, weak rectal wall. NO FUN.

I'd be happier if you concentrated on not pissing on my trouser leg when you sneezed, thank you!
