3 Bassists come to mind:
1) Geddy Lee - For a thorough lesson on how to play bass, listen to Geddy go. Try YYZ for starters.
2) Les Claypool - short of Lee only by a hair, mainly because most of his music is really out there.
3) John Paul Jones - 1/2 of the greatest rhythm sections in all rock history.

Jaco. He was so incredible! The best bass player alive is Victor Wooten. Les Claypool is also amazing

I'd have to agree with the person who answered Jaco Pastorious. Second place is a 5 way tie between Stanley Clarke, John Entwhistle (Who) - watch a Who concert video and you"ll know why I included him, Chris Squire (Yes), Victor Wooten (Flecktones), and Paul McCartney.

Victor Wooten. No contest.
Not many people know who he is...but that man is amazing. Ever hear "Amazing Grace" played on the bass? Yeah....
