There are a few options...

1) You could replace your 40GB hard drive with a larger drive; however, transferring the data would be a pain unless you have an additional laptop or some type of enclosure for an additional laptop hard drive for the data copy.

2) You could use an external USB or FireWire hard drive to transfer some of your data archives and/or files. If you were to do this, I would enable compression on the external drive and use it for archiving only.

3) You could purchase an external USB or FireWire enclosure for an IDE/SCSI/SATA hard drive. If you had a spare hard drive laying around, the only cost you would shell out would be $20-50 bucks for the enclosure.

4) You could keep the existing 40GB hard drive and enable compression on folder used for data storage and/or archiving. This will help save some hrd drive space, but is not a long term solution.

yeah! get an external hard drive, the best thing is that most of 'em have the plug and play USB, which is very cool because you don't need to worry about openin ur notebook and puttin a brand new hard drive inside. But the best thing of your USB hard drive is that you can take your files wherever you want to, from your notebook to a desktop computer, or viceversa.

Try using an external Harddrive. Its a bit slower than itnerneal, but its plug and play thru USB. It wud be good if u transferred things that didnt need to access memory very fast, such as pictures and songs to the external drive, this way ur internal drive wud be reserved for high performance applications such as games or movie editing.

you can possibly get a HD upgrade depending on the notebook. Otherwise, you probably have a lot of music and video that you dont know about or arent using that should be backed up on CD to save space. A CD can hold almost a Gig.

You'd be better off with a USB External hard drive or a thumb drive. You can also get a PCMCIA card that take CompactFlash cards for extra storage.

your best bet would be to get a portable external hard drive like a wd passport. all you have to do is plug it into a usb port. you can take it with you and switch between a laptop and desktop.

yes. You can either have a tech install a new internal one, or USB an external. You can also backup/store what you don't need in your computer to external media 'cd' etc.
