Usually. Depending on the manufacturer of your discs and the manufacturer of your burner. I bought some DVD's made by NexxTech that just don't work on my burner. Fortunately they work on the burner in my laptop, so I haven't completely wasted my money. :)

All of the answers below are correct... If you have an 8x DVD-R/RW burner and use a 16x DVD-R/RW disc, the data will be written to a speed of 8x for hardware compatibility reasons. In some instances, there are DVD burners originally rated at 8x speed which can write at speeds slightly faster; however, they won't be writing at 16x speeds. To achieve the 16x burning speed, you would need to replace your DVD burner.

If the disc says 16x, that just means that's as fast as it can burn.

ie. If you have a faster burner than 16x, the dvd won't burn faster than 16x becuase of the actual dvd.

The dvd you have will burn at 8x, although it not always best to burn it at the top speed because more things can go wrong with it (not finish for whatever reason...at least from my experience)

Definately. The disc can handle 16X but you're only capable of doing 8X. Just don't try to write a disc at 16X that can only do 8X!

The 16x are able to burn at speeds UP TO 16x, but can also burn at lower spaces. But as not all brands of DVDs work with all brands of burners, I would try a couple before buying a large package of them.

Most well but you may have to update the firmware and drivers. Go to the manufactures site & download and install the latest.

You won't be able to find 8X much longer. 16X is becomming the standard.
