That totally normal, Cable runs the world they want you buy it, if you want to watch tv without cable, its called Network TV you must get an Antenna and hook it up to your tv so the it can receive regular transmission of television stations.

The cable cord is like the "Cable Antenna" it sets your tv up to receive Cable Transmission. So to receive regular tv transmission you have to buy an Antenna so that your tv is equipped to receive network TV ok!

If you have the owner's manual for the television, look for a "troubleshooting" section, probably near the end--it may suggest some specific solutions for a problem of this sort.

Otherwise, you would need to provide some more information. Do you have a cable box? If so, the cable box is sending the television picture to the TV, tuning in the channels, and the television is only displaying the picture. If you aren't getting broadcast television channels (which would come from the antenna), this could be caused by a problem with the television tuner, the television may be set to only receive "CATV" versus brodcast TV. Is there a setting or switch somewhere in or on the television that allows you to select/unselect CATV?
