max is 20 degrees difference between return and supply--put a thermometer in each (return and supply) if it is around 15-20 degrees diff. then your a/c is doing all it can do--if not check air flow--vents covered or clogged air filters. if all that is ok then call local hvac contractor for service

I have been told that the maximum temperature difference is about 20 degrees from the outside temperature.

At least 15 degrees (F) cooler than the outside temp.
