Emo is a type of "music" which requires you to dress in vintage sweaters and pants much to tight for your own good. Emo stands for emotional. It is sometimes categorized with punk music but is very far from punk. But that is neither here nor there. To be simple, emo music sounds like a girly man crying his eyes out while trying to sing about how his girlfriend dumped him or how he loves some girl but the girl doesn't love him back.

Emo is short for "emotional," and also a type of music. It's sounds a lot like ska to me. When I was in high school it was the equivalent of a "skater kid."

Emo is shorthand for "emotional". Personally I think it's kinda stupid, being most music is emotional (either in it's creation, lyrics, or the listener's reaction), but it specifically is referencing a music movement that no one can seem to agree on. The original "emo" bands were ones like Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Built to Spill, Fugazi, etc. These bands influenced the now popular Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab for Cutie, etc. Still, a broad swath of music is called emo, ranging from acoustic like Dashboard Confessional to pop punk like Fall Out Boy to "screamo" (essentially sappy emotional metal toned down a notch or 2) bands like a Static Lullaby and Finch. People who are heavily involved in the genre sometimes bicker about who is emo and who isn't, but the core idea of emo that it is usually about relationships, loss, depression and many of the bands make references to suicide or homicide in their poetry to take revenge on the people who wronged them. This seems to make a vicious cycle in the genre, in that a band gets popular for playing songs about how they were hurt, so they go on tour only to have more failed relationships, then write more songs about failed relationships, so on and so forth. Many of the bands in the genre are still in, or barely out of, high school, and their styles and topics usually diversify through their albums, but the vast majority of the bands that are commonly referred to as emo in todays scene take bitter breakups as their heaviest influence.
