On your first trip you will meet and talk to the doctor. He will ask you some questions. Next you will be taken to a private room and asked to undress. When the doctor comes in he will bring a nurse so he is not alone with you. He will touch and feel on your breasts for any lumps. Then for the not so fun part. He will insert an instrument into the vagina so that the cervix becomes visible. This sometimes hurts a little, but it is more uncomfortable than anything else. He will then use a little tool and scrape some of the tissue off of the cervix to get it sent to a lab to see if there is anything unusual. He will then remove the instrument and with gloves and lubrication he will use two fingers to feel inside the vagina. He will also push on your stomach at the same time. Then you are all done. I definitely would not say that it hurts, it is physically uncomfortable and the first time is scary. But, there is nothing to worry about, those drs. do this all day every day. It is a lot less painful than having intercourse for the first time.
Hope this helps

It is scary for most women the first time. I would suggest, if you're confortable, bringing your mom, best friend, or boyfriend with you for the first visit. It made me feel much better. Definately don't put it off because you're scared. It shouldn't hurt, but if it does, it's very little. What happens: The doctor will do a Pap Smear. It's a test to look for abnormalities on your cervix. Some abnormalities can eventually cause cervical cancer if left undetected. The doctor will insert a device in to your vagine that will expand the walls so that he can collect a specimen from your cervix. It takes all of 1 minute. He'll probably ask you personal questions about your sex life, how many partners...etc.
He may also test you for several types of STDs.

No but you should talk to some people to see who the recommend. I have gone to both men & women gynecologists and have no preference. Having worked for doctors' for several years I can tell you that most practitioners appreciate your being honest about being anxious.
Just think to yourself if you're more comfortable seeing a man or woman, also a MD or Nurse Practitioner (who is able to do most anything a MD can do), mostly NPs are easier to relate to.
But if you're a virgin, my NP told me that unless you have a family history or above 21, there's no need to have a GYN exam. She had her first one at 18 (she's now in her mid-50's) and she was a virgin. She said that it was scary and now unnecessary. She told me that most younger women need to go because of STDs or damage from sex.
What I would do is check with your family & friends for opinions then call around to see if you can talk to a gynecologist. Your own doctor may also do GYN exams....just ask & Good Luck :)

I was really nervous when I first when, but I think it was more embarrasing than scary. It didn't really hurt, it was just kinda uncomfortable. As for info, you have to fill out paperwork, then you undress, except your bra, then put on a paper gown, then the doc comes in the room and you lay on the table and they examine you. He/she should explain things as they go along. They will also examine your breasts (my doc told me I was wearing my bra too tight) Thats pretty much it. They will mail the results to you.

It can be a bit scary, trust me I know. The key point to remember is to stay calm. Ask all the questions you have. Have your gyn walk you through what she is doing. Take deep breaths through it and you will be fine. Its a very exam depending on how relaxed you are. Good luck.

It's scary at first...it does not hurt, but it is uncomfortable. They may ask questions..Take your blood pressure, take a urine sample, take a blood sample, do a pap smear (does not hurt, but is a bit uncomfortable) and do a breast examine...that's usually it unless you have a problem. i would suggest going to a woman, especially if you never been. Good luck! it will be OK! :)
