I think that the thing that makes the scariest movies are things that could really happen in a person's life. If the situation in the movie is so far out there, it doesn't seem to have the same punch. If you can put yourself in the situation of something really horribly scary happening, that is what makes the best horror movie.

I liked Jaw and the exorcismm of Emily Rose. The movie Hostel wasn't all that scary at all. Saw was kind of but not all that bad. White Noise was pretty jumpy movie too.

Not seeing everything-leaving our own imaginations to fill in the blanks. Shadows. You know when you see something out of the corner of your eye? That stuff is always scarier than seeing something straight on.
I love scary movies and i haven't seen one in a LONG time. I like seeing movies that scare me for days after-that make me afraid to be alone in my house. Scary movies now are terrible. They show too much. Also, don't give too much away in the preview-that ruins the movie too.

jaws,
because you don't see anything at first. you don't have a true grasp of the size, the acting is low key, not overly dramatic. and its plausible.
Also its set in a place that's already intimidating (the ocean) by its size.
I just think about the number of times something has touched my foot in shallow water and I didn't know what it was and screamed like a little girl.

A psychological thriller like " Sixth Sense" or " One Flew over the Cukoo's nest " of any Hithcock, like...." Psycho". Those are my favorites.

When it involves seemingly 'normal' people, and no one suspects anything is wrong.....then you suddenly have that chilling music, sharp camera angles, and you KNOW something is about to happen, but you can't look away!

suspense, like the original Psycho by Hitchcock.
Or whatever it is that John Carpenters "Prince of Darkness" has.
