It's always been like that from generation to generation. It's has deal with passing responsiblities, morals, traditions, and other things on to the next. In some cases, a previous generation of people will think the younger generation is incapbable of doing whatever is needed to be done or fixed with a society.
1) When you say generation it could be a period of 18-25 years or even more than that.
2) You could go by the pre WW-II generation (or the Great Depression generation), Baby-Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, or Generation (Z, 9/11, or Millennium). Marked by some big cultural event or social change
3) Class of Graduation (usually High School/College): Class of 1980-89, Class of 1930-39, Class of 2000-2010

Most of the time elders will not give the younger generation a chance! But when they do they realize... wow they might be on to something. Some also think since they been alive longer than you automatically means they know everything and that you are wrong... The only true way to help them to change there mind is do what I do: Tell them that there were 'bad' people when they were growing up that put bad impressions on them as a child, and there are 'bad' people now too that also give the elders the wrong impressions on youths.

Because they are older and lived longer than the younger generation, they see the way the younger generation acts and the lack of respect most of them have and think about the way they were brought up and how hard they had to srruggle.

Old people as you put had to actuall work their asses off and do with out unlike most spoiled people of today. They beleive in family values and todays generation is it seems to be about themselves.
Could most people live happily with out Electricity or Cell phones, even computers? Most people will say HELL NO no way.... But yet these old people some of them have had to do this.
They may be bitter but they have the right.. I am only 29 and is sick to death of todays society, and some people especially this generation does not see a problem with it. Alot of people need to wise up, because here in the near future things will get tough... I see another depression comming, are you metally and emotinally ready for it, if it happens, are you willing to give up the comforts of Technology? And even Work will hardley be any? This generation is in sad shape.
If you think I am full of it or have no idea what I am talking about, it's time to start living and wonder what the real world is like, and comments like your gay, just shows how ignorant people are.

No, they are not all dumb but many are and since a majority are, it's scary (and I'm not that old and a lot of my peers are clueless). Younger people can't spell, speak proper English (when necessary), and carry out simple tasks on time (assignments or just being prompt). It's very sad and it makes the ones that do right look bad till we've proven ourselves.

This underestimation as you call it is simply a recognition, a nod as it were, to their own past...they were once the younger generation.

Because all you DAMN kids don't know the VALUE of WORK. Back in the good ol' days I'd have to get up at 4 in the morning, milk the cows, prepare my old man's tractor before WALKING 20 miles to school. Those days certainly were swell. All you care for is TV, clothes, parties, those DAMN phones, and those DAMN little white things you plug into your ears. You'll all go DEAF. Also you want cars WITHOUT working for any of those things you sissies, freeloading, good for nothings. RESPECT? You DAMN kids don't even know the meaning of that word. Back in the good ol' days, my old man would leave his five fingers marked across my face if I even THOUGHT about talking back to him. Plus you DAMN kids don't even know how to speak properly. Whatever happened to words like "sir" and "ma'm". All the younger generation knows to say is "yo". You DAMN kids are sending the whole blessed country of ours to HELL!
I hope I'm BURIED by the day the country is run by this DUMB, ILLITERATE, UNRESPECTFUL, LAZY, DEAF, GOOD FOR NOTHING generation of yours!!

a friend of mine whose mother died recently was cornered last week on a train by an old women who screamed at her (radomly and out of nowhere) that the youth have it easy and that they didnt know what life and pain are and loads of loud rabble like that and wen she calmly tried to excuse herself from the conversation, she got yelled at by the conductor for "upsetin" an old lady!
i think older people forget what being young is like and lookin back now, they may feel they were stupid, but to tell the young that they are stupid is very insulting!
