Hobbits are a subset of the race of Men from J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, sometimes considered a separate race. They first appear in the book The Hobbit, and also play a major role in The Lord of the Rings.

Homo floresiensis ("Man of Flores") is the proposed name for a possible species in the genus Homo, remarkable for its small body, small brain, and survival until relatively recent times. It is thought to have been contemporaneous with modern humans (Homo sapiens) on the Indonesian island of Flores. One sub-fossil skeleton, dated at 18,000 years old, is largely complete. It was discovered in deposits in Liang Bua Cave on Flores in 2003. Parts of eight other individuals, all diminutive, have been recovered as well as similarly small stone tools from horizons ranging from 94,000 to 13,000 years ago. The first of these fossils was unearthed in 2003; the publication date of the original description is October 2004; and confirmation of species status was expected to appear in March 2005, following publication of details of the brain of Flores Man. However, primatologist Robert Martin of the Field Museum in Chicago published an article in Science theorizing that the original specimen does not represent a new species, but is a modern Homo sapiens with microcephaly. [1]

Flores has been described (in the journal Nature) as "a kind of Lost World", where archaic animals, elsewhere long extinct, had evolved into giant and dwarf forms through allopatric speciation, due to its location East of the Wallace Line. The island had dwarf elephants (a species of Stegodon, a prehistoric elephant) and giant monitor lizards akin to the Komodo dragon, as well as H. floresiensis, which can be considered a species of diminutive human.

The discoverers have called members of the diminutive species "hobbits", after J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional race of roughly the same height. In the mythology of the island, there were common references to small furry people called Ebu Gogo even into the 19th century.

Hobbits like that are from Lord of the Rings by Tolkein. What your friend was talking about was the fact that they found a small skeleton that was very old and was about 3 feet tall even though it was an adult. They thought it was a new species of early humans, but decided it was a modern human that had a growth defect.

Yes, Hobbits are real. Of course they are not like the mythical Bilbo Bag gins, in the story of 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R Tolkien. Hobbits are people who chose to seclude themselves, to meditate, or to just live simple lives. Mountain-men, could be called 'Hobbits' because of there simple, plain, lives. Hobbits usually live alone, keeping a garden, with no phones, televisions, radios, or any kind of connection with people, like you and I. Hobbits are very secluded and keep there own sort of life. Making there own medicine, food, and clothing the Hobbit race keep a healthy, humble living environment, most especially in there homes. Made mostly of mud bricks and twigs etc they ARE VERY SIMPLE. I hope my answer helped!

Hobbits are people that are about half the size of Men and have furry feet that are leathery, so they don't need shoes. They ARE real, surprisingly-they found a hobbit woman in I think it was the Philippines.

Mac you must be joking. Your definition is basically that of a hermit, whic is someone who lives a life of seclusion. A Hobbit is a ficitional race of beings in The Lord of The Rings books and The..duh...Hobbit.

In the context of Tolkien's fictional legendarium, Hobbits are evidently related to Men, and are represented as a pygmy offshoot of that race. Their exact origin is unknown, but by the early Third Age they were living in the Vales of Anduin in Wilderland.

They're from the Lord of the Rings by Tolkien. Sorry if everybody is telling that to you, but it really is. (^_^) They're not based on any other stories or legends, unlike dwarves and elves and fairies.

A few months back, they found skeletons that are like midget humans, only they have adapted to where they live and got a bit changed. The scientists who found them nicknamed them 'hobbits'.

Hope I helped! (^_^)
