I have worked in the marketing field for several years and the last job I had was with a bank. I found that one must have WILLINGNESS, and the ability to be TRUSTWORTHY. Willingness is a key ingredient in any job but especially in marketing and advertising. One must be willing to do what it takes to get the job done. The long hours, and dedication will go without saying. Also along the way having your clients trust that you have their best interest in mind. So you must always secure your clients trust before being very successful with that client. I have since went on to own my own business and the two characteristics still stand out as the most important.

Dogged ambition. Everybody is out there waving an MBA, it will be helpful, but not the key to the city.Know what the world is buying, check trends, see when they become stable phenomena. Keep looking for the next next thing. Know technology. Don't be afraid to start at the bottom, Media department at an ad agency is good, you'll learn a lot. If the Chief Executive Officer worked his/her way up from the mail room, don't crow too loudly about your academic credentials, that is the kiss of death. Good luck

Couple of tips for you that have served me well:
1) Make and keep as many business relationships as possible. The more people you have in your corner the better.
2) Don't yell at people
3) Always look to be on your organizations highest profile projects
4) Be true to your resume. If it doesn't change year to year you are doing something wrong
5) Always look to beat last year's numbers. Even if you fall short of a plan, at least you can say you did better then last year
6) Don't ever follow a legend in a new position. Nobody remembers who followed Lou Gehrig at first base for the Yankees.

I was a retail buyer and one of my suppliers offered me a marketing position. Salesmen who are creative and detail oriented are often asked to join the marketing department.
Other than people from high profile MBA programs, very few are able to find a marketing job right out of school.
In today's world, it's a big plus to be proficient in a second language.

There are two key points:
What is there different about the product or service that I am advertising that separates them from the competition?
And how does that translate to a benefit for my customer?

First, you must have your own marketing plan, then follow your formulation of specific objectives and the last thing to do is that monitor your activities.

YOu have to be able to sell your spit to someone. that meanstelling them what the benefits of your products are and mentioning the what the person is missing without your product. using the words, Free, easy, You, guarantee, have, get, will attract people to consider your product, and by using instances that someother person purchased your product and how good it has bee to them, in othe words, a testimonial.

I'm looking for that answer as well. The ability to take criticism as well as not caring when people tell you no. Creativity is a good one as well.
