It can mean many things...To a certain extent, it is a warning signal, and you should be alert to something coming up on the road ahead of you.
In reference to the yellow light that's between the green light and the red light on a traffic signal, it is a warning that the light will soon change to red, so you might want to slow down, instead of getting the ticket for running the red light.
Sometimes it means the train is coming, so you shouldn't cross the tracks.
I definitely recommend paying attention next time you see one.
