I've had a wasp's nest on my back porch for a little while now, and it has been growing! I don't have anything to protect my face, as of now, so I've been putting it off. Any suggestions about the best way to remove it? At night? Any special chemicals? Horror stories welcomed :)

Buy a couple of cans of Wasp Not. This insecticide has a long range to it. Stand about 20 feet away from the nest and soak it good with insecticide, then run like hell to someplace inside. Wait about an hour and do it again. After 3 or 4 treatments almost all of the wasps will be dead and the nest will be inimical to life. Wait a few days before removing the dead nest.

We get wasp nests all the time under our eaves. Go to a hardware store and pickup wasp and hornet spray. The less expensive kind works just as well at the pricier version (I've done a side by side comparison).
Wear goggles if the eaves are really high up so the spray doesn't get in your eyes, otherwise it's not necessary.
Wait till early morning somewhere between 2:30 am -6:00 am when it's very dark outside to spray. (That's when they sleep.) Have a pole/broomstick handle and plastic handy. Aim a steady stream at the nest until no more wasps fall out of the nest usually 3 min depending on the size of the nest. Golf ball sized nests are small in my book.

Many on this thread recommend waiting a few days, but it's totally unnecessary. Just spray until no more wasps fall out of the nest. Wait a few minutes and knock down the nest. The stem is slightly sticky so it takes some force. Wrap it up in a bag and throw away.

Easy - I remove one a week around our house.

Get a can of Raid Wasp & Hornet Killer. It will shoot a stream 20 feet. Go to about 15 feet from the nest and release a three or four second spray soaking the nest. The wasps will fall stright to the ground.

Come back in an hour or so & spray again to pick up any strays. The next day use a broom to knock down the nest.

Once you have done it a time or two it won't bother you. Even if a wasp flies off the nest while you are spraying they won't bother you. I think they are dazed.

Remove it at night, being careful not to talk or walk loudly as it will wake up the wasps. Also don't use a flashlight they are attracted to light. I find just after dusk to be best. Then take a cloth bag (like a heavy canvas bag) over the entire nest and quickly tie it off at the top; as you draw in the tie, pull the nest free. The bag should be well sealed. Set the bag in a pail of water; drop a rock on the bag to keep it fully submerged. The water will filter thru the canvas after a time and drown all the wasps - problem solved.

Yes, definitely at night, when the wasps are asleep. There are preparations you can squirt into the wasp nest to anesthetize them and make sure no stragglers come soaring out. Best way to dispose of it is to put it in a bucket of water with a brick on top, to keep it under, and leave it there for several days. If you put it in a bag in the garbage, the wasps will come out to play when the anesthesia wears off -- and that's not much fun for the garbage man!

I bought a can of Wasp killer at Wal-Mart, Spray them good when they are not active, once it starts getting dark out maybe like 8:30-9:00 pm. That should take care of them. I would do that a couple nights in a row just to make sure then get a ladder and knock off the nest and throw it away.

Take a long pole or stick and wrap an old t-shirt around it and secure with duct tape. Saturate the t-shirt with diesel fuel and light. Hold the flaming rag under the nest(at night or when it is cool) and burn the nest.
