Yes, although she has drawn on a number of sources, legendary, mythical, historical for background and inspiration. This is common for virtually any fantasy author. For the description of the basilisk in "Chamber of Secrets," she took HEAVILY from Bulfinch's Mythology, ditto the phoenix. The spells and such she has mostly made up, but many are in more or less genuine Latin.

It depends on what you consider original:
Harry Potter>>> Yes, he's never been seen before.
Story about kids and growing up>>> Nope; classic.
Tale of Good vs. Evil>>> Nope Classic again.
Story of Morals>>> Nope. Still not new.
Magic>>> Nope.
THAT magic>>> Definately unique.
Characters>>> Seems new to me.
So, in an essence, no it's not. However, the way she wrote it and the characters she chose for the purpose are original, so yeah, I'd say Harry Potter is relatively unique.

I do think that the Harry Potter series was originally written. J.K Rowling's did a great and fantastic job in writing a book of great stature.

They must be with all of the people that love them so very much!
I dont think that JK would have so much money if they were not original. But I would not doubt that she drew ideas from other sources! Perhaps she was doing alot of reading herself just before writing her own stories.
I personally enjoy both the books and the movies! Even with all of the differences.
Its about magic and belief!
But then I'm sure that there are people that would dissagree with my opinions.

Yes, I think it is. Though some of the stories, legends and stuff are from other books and sources, what makes it cool is how she puts it together. It's really an Original work based on Original works. If you get what I mean... Heheheh... ?(^_^)
Hope I've helped.

Yes, they are, although she drew a lot on other legends and folklore from other sources. This was to add to the magical environment, and she does it very well, I think.
