The conservative movement in America has been taken over by leftest elements and former believers in Leon Trotsky and other New Word Order types who want empire and conquest. The Old Right which was libertarian, individualistic, and wanted low taxes and a government that would stay out of people's privacy. There are many good reasons why someone would want to be a real conservative like Barry Goldwater and not these phonies in the Bush administration.

If you are a millionaire then you should be a conservative. If not, then you'd do well to research the differences between a conservative and a liberal. Liberals want to give you affordable health care, adequate retirement, and a decent wage. They generally want to pay for those services by taxing the richest among us. The rich have, for the most part, made their fortunes on the hard work of the poorest among us. Liberals believe that it should be the responsibility of those individuals to give some back to the people that earned it and it should be the responsibility of the government to make sure that happens. Conservatives, of course, believe that the good concience of those wealthy folks will require them to set up these programs for their dedicated employees and so government intervention is unneccesary. Realistically though, this doesn't usually happen. Just ask a Wal-Mart employee.

There was a time when "Conservative" meant fiscal responsibility, respect for the environment, personal accountability. If that's what you mean, I say that's great. Unfortunately, Republicans have stolen the title "Conservative" and have a very bad track record on all accounts.
For instance, what was the first thing Bush suggested to ease the price on oil? Loosen environmental restrictions! Another example. Don't raise taxes...that's the Democrats. Instead, borrow $30,000 in the name of every man, woman and child in America from China and Saudi Arabia. Our national debt is the largest in history. True conservatives don't like to owe anyone anything. That's just not "Conservative" thinking in my opinion.

There is no valid reason for not becoming a Conservative, just as there is no valid reason for not siding with Liberals. Pasting a group of people with generalities saying that Conservatives are all foot-washing Baptists or that Liberals are lazy and can't work is kind of racist.
Often people will vote for candidates just because they belong to certain parties, and that's just plain stupid and making your vote biased, not based on your judgement on how well you think the candidate will do.
Therefore, I am independant.

If the definition of it is what you really are then there is no reason not to be. This country reached this stage of power with the ratio
majority conservative than liberals. If it was the other way around
well good luck !! we will be lucky to own alcatraz from Mexico. Anyways, a liberal who becomes more educated will eventually turn into a Conservative.

When you get there read about some of the things that the Republican are doing in the world (we invaded a soveriegn nation called "Iraq" pulling our resources away from a terrorist ridden nation called "Afghanistan", Good News!-in 20 years Iraq might be a democracy and we can bring our troops home!)
Also research "Jack Abramoff", "Ralph Reed" & "Duke Cunningham". They really embody the conservative spirit!

I know how you feel. I never set out to be conservative and don't really like being one, but feel like I am almost forced to be one. I mean, look at the alternative...I'd have to believe in some sort of Disneyesque version of socialism to believe half of the things liberals say.
Bush is not Hitler and Osama is not a misunderstood "freedom fighter."

Don't even try to let anyone else tell you what to do. If you agree with the Republican platform, then by all means, support it. Same for the Democrat platform. To be honest, of course I would enjoy having you on "The Dark Side". But that's for you to decide.

Sure, according to a couple of political theorists state that the biggest difference between conservatives and liberals is in human nature.
Conservatives think that humans ought to be punished for their wrongdoings, are selfish and inherently bad.
Liberals think humans are generally good, kind, and supportive of others.
which do you support?

Yes. I think it's better to not identify wholey with either conservative or liberal, right or left, but to be more issue-oriented and one concerned about the world and population at large, rather than one segment.
