Humming needs air. Closing your mouth to hum means that air can only get through your nose. Plug your nose and...no air.

Because we hum through our nose and cut off the air supply. If we hummed through our mouth we wouldn't actually be humming.

b/c you are breathing out your nose so when you plug your nose it stops the air from coming out causing you to stop humming!

because when you hum, you are passing air through your nose and it vibrates letting the sound come out, when you plug your nose, you stop the vibrations and the air stops flowing

I studied this (sort of) in college and here is the "technical" reason.
When you hum, you are making the "m" sound. The "m" sound is considered a "nasal" sound. Hence, if you block the way the air is being released to make the sound, you can make the "m" sound and you can't hum
Speech lingo for you!

well you see air has to run past your vocal cords to make them vibrate to make the hummin noise, and since its impossible to breathe in and out at the same time you cant circulate the air in your nasal passage. the air needs some place to exit and when we hum we automatically close our mouth and if we plug up or nose too... no worky :P

woah i never knew that but i think that it is because we have out mouth closed and we need to exhale when we sing or hum or talk so when we plug our nose we can't exhale anymore. i don't know but that is weird i never knew that
