The obvious answr to this question is Wilt Chamberlain, and the reason is simple. The entire game was changed because of him. They had to widen the lane, change goaltending rules, and plenty of other reasons that make him not only the greatest center ever, but the greatest player ever. Ok, how about this: 100 pts in a game, 55 rebounds in a game, averaged 50 pts in the 1962 season, predicted that he would lead the league in assists and did it from the center position. The man was undeniably able to do what others could only dream of as an individual player. As far as championships Bill Russell is unequaled, but he had Hall of Famers surrounding him on the court at all times, so the comparison is unfair in the championship dept. Individually, Wilt is the most dominant force ever. Shaq is a beast, but if it wasnt for Wilt, Shaq wouldnt be the force that he is.

Bill Russell without a doubt.

His major contribution to the sport was raising defensive play to a new level; he is commonly considered the greatest defensive center to ever play the game, and is considered by some to be
the greatest basketball player of all-time

He led the Boston Celtics to eight straight championships.
