If the problem was bad gas all you'd have to do is drain the tank and put good gas in. I doubt if you ever had bad gas, I think you have other problems. You could have an air intake leak. BTW, do you have a carb or fuel injection? Harleys are notorious for developing air intake leaks, and the fix is not so difficult.

Check it by taking a can of carb cleaner, and while the bike is running at an idle, spray the carb cleaner around the intake ports and carb/fuel injection contections. If you notice a change in idle, you have a leak. It may be as simple as tightening the intake manifold or changing the rubber gaskets.

My guess would be a "fouled" spark plug. You probably have carbon build-up in your cylinder. Remove your plugs and inspect them. If they are clean..... then look at air filter.... I once had a mouse make a nest in mine ( bike ran like crap for no reason... until I removed the air box.) If that's not it.... lookm at carb ajustment.
A Engine only needs 4 things to run.
1) fuel
2) air
3) spark
4) compression

Drain the tank and carb and put in new gas. Maybe add some "Seafoam" to the gas to clean out the carb.

usually a backfire is from running too lean, which can be from and air leak at the carb or intake manifold.
