We put meaning on things because if we didnt why would we do anything in the first place

The purpose is transfer the reality in your mine. The meanings can put pictures, melodys, persons or what ever you want whitout that thinks. Some anthropologist and psychologist say the meanings are the begin of the thougth, and the end of your thinking, because this delimit your personality and your vision of the world that came from the repertory of meanings that you have.

putting meaning on something we giving life to that something which is meaningless at first place, and then having benefits of all kind of dramas to be involved with. The purpose of meaning is to understand that through the pain in the butt...Does real Beauty has meaning? NO. It is just breath taking Beautiful...Put meaning on it and you destroy Beauty, leaving only smart *** analytical ashes...
