They may return new paper to you later. Just like, when someone borrows money, they don't return the exact same bills as they borrowed; they just give back the amount of money they borrowed. In the same way, someone may plan on giving you back some paper later on.

It's a courtesy; not only is it a polite way of asking for a sheet of paper, there is an implied meaning that one day, if you find yourself in a similar situation, they'll "lend" you a sheet back (unfortunately for you, they probably won't have one to lend you....lol).

lol that was really funny and cute. they are not going to give you back a used sheet it is just that one day you may need a sheet and the one that you gave that sheet of paper to should be able to give it right back a black one that is. lol

someone once actually gave me the piece of paper back at the end of class, it had all their notes on it, I found it really strange at the time, but it was pretty funny. and sadly I have the habit of correcting people whenever the ask to "borrow" a piece, I tell them "you can have it, I don't want it back when you are done"

The person asking will give you a different piece of paper at a later date. Possibly with intrest.
