At my company apartment we have a cheap top-loading washer that always twists the sheets into virtual rope, even to the point of having torn a few of them.
At home I have a Maytag Neptune front-loading washer that not only gets things cleaner, but does so more gently with less water, less energy, less noise, less propane (hot water), less detergent, and less drying time. It never twists my sheets.
Conclusion: You pay a lot up front for a good washer, but the combined savings are totally worth it. You may want to consider a better washer.

I put a tennis ball in with them when I put them in the dryer. I tried doing this in the washer as well, but it didn't really work. Now I wash the sheets and towels together and the weight of the sheets seems to keep the fitted and flat sheets from totally twisting up. Also, using a slower agitation speed like for delicates helps.

Don't wrap them around the barrel of the machine. Bunch them up and wash 3 or 4 spaced around the machine.
